Once they have expired, eggs smell very bad and become unfit for consumption. However, it is difficult to know when you can no longer eat them. Indeed, the use-by date (UBD) or expiration date is certainly a valuable indication.
1 – THE SMELL TEST TO KNOW IF AN EGG IS STILL GOOD
This method is a classic and requires no equipment other than a nose that can smell odors (technique not effective on a blocked nose day). Smell the egg looking for the sulfurous smell characteristic of rotten eggs. If you don’t smell anything, it means that there is no risk. It can be eaten!
If you are still in doubt, break the shell to retrieve the egg on a plate or in a bowl and sniff it. If you don’t smell anything, it’s good. Otherwise, throw it away.
2 – WE TRUST THE NOISE
Put an egg near your ear, shake it and listen carefully. If you don’t hear anything, everything is fine. You can have a hard-boiled egg, a fried egg, a poached egg or a scrambled egg without any risk to your health! If, on the other hand, you hear a liquid sloshing noise, it’s not a good sign. It’s better to avoid eating it. The use limit has surely been well exceeded, whatever the label says about optimal use…
