Cleaning Greasy Range Knobs: Nana’s Simple Trick

Step 2: Prepare the Ammonia Solution
Put on your gloves to protect your hands from the strong fumes of ammonia. In a small bowl, pour about 1/4 cup of ammonia. The exact amount may vary depending on how many knobs you have, but a little goes a long way.

Step 3: Bag It Up
Place the greasy range knobs in the large plastic zip-top bag. Carefully pour the ammonia into the bag, ensuring it coats the knobs without spilling. You want the fumes to do the cleaning, not submerge the knobs.

Step 4: Let the Magic Happen
Seal the bag tightly, leaving a small amount of air inside. Let it sit for several hours, or ideally overnight. The ammonia fumes will loosen and dissolve the caked-on grease and grime. No scrubbing is needed!

Step 5: Wipe and Rinse
After the knobs have soaked in the ammonia fumes, open the bag in a well-ventilated area (preferably outside or near an open window) to avoid inhaling the strong fumes. Remove the knobs and use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe away the now-loosened grime. If needed, give the knobs a quick rinse under warm water.
