On the evening of Wednesday, January 29, a passenger plane collided with a military helicopter near Washington, DC, near Ronald Reagan National Airport. “Flight 5342, from Wichita, Kansas (ICT) to Washington DC (DCA), was involved in an accident. Sixty passengers and four crew members were on board the aircraft,” American Airlines said in a statement. Three military personnel were on board the helicopter, known as a “Black Hawk”. A major search and rescue operation is underway at the scene of the accident, in the icy waters of the Potomac. Twenty-eight bodies have been recovered so far. “Twenty-seven bodies of passengers from the plane and one body of a person from the helicopter have been recovered. We do not believe there are any survivors. We are now at the point where we are moving from a rescue operation to a recovery operation,” Washington Fire Chief John Donnelly said at a news conference.
