Ingredients:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Ground nutmeg, for garnish

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place 4 ramekins or custard cups in a baking dish large enough to hold them without touching.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and granulated sugar until well combined and slightly thickened.
  3. Heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat until it is just simmering. Remove from heat and slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to prevent curdling.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the custard mixture into the prepared ramekins, dividing it evenly among them.
  6. Sprinkle a pinch of ground nutmeg over the top of each custard.
  7. Carefully pour hot water into the baking dish around the ramekins, being careful not to get any water into the custard.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the custard is set around the edges but still slightly jiggly in the center.
  9. Remove the baking dish from the oven and carefully transfer the ramekins to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Once cooled, refrigerate the custards for at least 2 hours, or until chilled and set.
  11. Serve the Amish Baked Custard chilled, garnished with additional nutmeg if desired.
