Cook the Hot Dogs: Grill or pan-fry the hot dogs over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally until fully heated through.
Prepare the Chili: If using canned chili, heat it in a saucepan over medium heat until warm. If you’re making homemade chili, prepare it ahead of time.
Toast the Buns: Butter the insides of the hot dog buns and toast them in a skillet or under the broiler for a minute or two until golden brown.
Assemble the Sandwiches:
Place each hot dog inside the toasted bun.
Spoon a generous amount of chili over each hot dog.
Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top of the chili.
Melt the Cheese: Place the assembled chili cheese dog sandwiches under the broiler for 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Garnish and Serve: Add diced onions and a drizzle of mustard if desired. Serve hot and enjoy with fries or chips!
