Ingredients:
– White distilled vinegar (Do not use flavored or colored vinegar)
– Laundry detergent (liquid or powder)
– Your laundry items (clothes, towels, etc.)
Directions:
1. For Whiter Whites:
Vinegar is an excellent alternative to harsh bleach when it comes to brightening whites.
1. Add Vinegar to the Wash Cycle:
– Add 1/2 to 1 cup of white distilled vinegar directly into the washing machine’s fabric softener compartment or during the rinse cycle. This will allow the vinegar to work on removing soap residue, minerals, and stains that make whites look dull.
2. Wash as Usual:
– Proceed with your usual washing routine using your regular laundry detergent. The vinegar will naturally brighten the whites without causing any damage to your fabrics.
3. Optional Add-Ins:
– For an extra boost, you can add a tablespoon of baking soda to the wash. This combination will help lift stubborn stains and odors, leaving your whites looking fresh and bright.
2. For Softer Towels:
Towels often become rough and stiff after multiple washes due to detergent buildup and hard water. Here’s how vinegar can help.
1. Vinegar as a Fabric Softener:
– Add 1 cup of white distilled vinegar to your washing machine during the rinse cycle. The vinegar will dissolve the soap and mineral deposits that have accumulated on the towels, restoring their softness.
2. Wash with Warm Water:
– Set your washing machine to a warm water cycle (not hot) to help the vinegar break down the soap buildup without damaging the fabric.
3. Dry Towels Properly:
– After washing, dry your towels in the dryer on a low heat setting. For an extra fluffy feel, toss in a couple of dryer balls (or tennis balls wrapped in socks) to help fluff up the fibers.
3. For Stubborn Stains:
Vinegar can also be used to treat tough stains like sweat, deodorant marks, or food spills.
1. Pre-Treat the Stain:
– Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the solution directly onto the stained area and allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes.
2. Wash as Usual:
– After pre-treating, wash the garment as usual, and the stain should be significantly reduced or eliminated.
4. For Refreshing Smelly Laundry:
If your laundry smells musty or stale (especially towels), vinegar can help neutralize odors.
1. Add Vinegar During the Rinse Cycle:
– Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle of your washing machine to neutralize odors and leave your laundry smelling fresh.
2. Dry Properly:
– Make sure to dry your clothes or towels properly after washing. If items are left damp for too long, odors can return.
